Dr. Patricia Ramsey – Dr. Al Vann Legacy Award Honroee

Brooklyn, NY – The Vanguard Independent Democratic Association (VIDA) hosted its annual Spring Soirée Fundraiser on Sunday, March 22, at The Dumbo Loft, bringing together community leaders, activists, supporters, and elected officials for an afternoon dedicated to celebrating leadership, community impact, and a shared commitment to political empowerment.

Held at The Dumbo Loft, the fundraiser was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including prominent elected officials who reinforced their commitment to community-driven change. Democratic Leader and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, NYS Assemblywoman Stefani Zinerman, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, and New York City Comptroller Mark Levine, all served as guest speakers. Their presence highlighted the ongoing collaboration between VIDA and the address the needs of members and Brooklyn residents.

Throughout the afternoon, honorees were recognized for their contributions to civic engagement and political advocacy. Each awardee has played a pivotal role in mobilizing voters, advocating for progressive policies, and mentoring the next generation of leaders. Their work continues to inspire and lay the foundation for lasting change.

Honoring Changemakers in Brooklyn

The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of awards to outstanding community leaders whose efforts have significantly contributed to political empowerment, community, and civic engagement:

Dr. Patricia Ramsey – Dr. Al Vann Legacy Award

Dr. Patricia Ramsey, President of Medgar Evers College, is recognized with the Dr. Al Vann Legacy Award for her distinguished leadership and unwavering commitment to expanding access to higher education. Under her leadership, Medgar Evers College continues to serve as a vital institution for opportunity and advancement, providing students from diverse backgrounds with pathways to academic success and professional achievement. Dr. Ramsey’s dedication to educational equity and community empowerment reflects the enduring legacy of Dr. Al Vann and continues to strengthen Brooklyn’s future through the power of education.

Barry Cooper – Health and Social Empowerment Award

Barry Cooper was honored as the recipient of the Health and Social Empowerment Award for his transformative work supporting the mental health and empowerment of young men of color. As the Founder and Executive Director of The B.R.O. Experience Foundation (Brothers Redefining Opportunity), Cooper has been dedicated to creating programs and safe spaces that address critical mental health challenges while mentoring the next generation. Since founding the organization in 2020, his work has helped bridge opportunity gaps and uplift young men across Brooklyn communities.

Tywan Anthony – Civic Leadership Award

Tywan Anthony was honored for his strong civic leadership and commitment to empowering Brooklyn communities. A seasoned real estate professional, he oversees millions of square feet of commercial and residential property and serves as Brooklyn Chapter President of the Bedford Stuyvesant Real Estate Board, Inc. He has also served on Brooklyn Community Board 3, founded the nonprofit New York Crusaders, and teaches real estate at several colleges and universities. Through his professional leadership and community advocacy, Anthony continues to promote civic engagement, economic opportunity, and leadership development across Brooklyn.

Oma Holloway – Community Economic Impact Award

Oma Holloway was recognized for her impactful work advancing economic opportunity and supporting community development across Brooklyn. As Chief Operating Officer of Bridge Street Development Corporation, she plays a key leadership role in initiatives that promote financial empowerment, workforce development, and economic growth in historically underserved communities. Holloway also serves as a Board Member of the Tompkins Avenue Merchant Association (TAMA), where she supports local businesses and neighborhood revitalization efforts. Her dedication to expanding opportunities and uplifting local residents continues to strengthen the economic foundation of Brooklyn communities.

Kevin Gibson – President’s Community Service Award

Kevin Gibson was honored for his unwavering commitment to community service and his continued efforts to uplift Brooklyn residents. An engaged member of the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association, Gibson actively participates in meetings, forums, and organizational initiatives while also volunteering his time to support numerous VIDA events that promote civic engagement and community empowerment. Through his dedication and willingness to serve, he continues to help strengthen community connections and advance VIDA’s mission.

Michael Robinson – President’s Community Service Award

Michael Robinson was recognized for his consistent dedication to community engagement and service. An active volunteer with the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association, Robinson has played an important role in supporting VIDA events and community outreach efforts that bring residents together and encourage civic participation. His willingness to give his time and talents reflects the spirit of service and leadership celebrated by the President’s Community Service Award.

Kay Pryor – President’s Community Service Award

Kay Pryor was honored for her tireless commitment to serving the Brooklyn community and for her dedicated volunteer work with the Vanguard Independent Democratic Association. Pryor has supported numerous VIDA events and initiatives aimed at empowering residents and strengthening civic engagement. Her passion for service and her dedication to uplifting others continue to make a meaningful impact in the community.

VIDA leaders expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community and donors who made the fundraiser a success. The funds raised will help sustain VIDA’s mission to educate, empower, and mobilize Brooklyn residents, ensuring that their voices remain a driving force in local and state politics.
